Team Building can have many purpose and objectives. The common general purpose for having team buildings is to:-

In a corporate team building setting, after the general purpose for having the team building has been established, tangible and intangible learning objectives or desired learning outcome are identified either through a training/learning needs analysis (TNA/LNA) or alternatively from feedbacks from our clients. Sample objectives are:-
- To foster stronger relationship and cohesiveness in teams.
- To ignite the spirit of achievement to achieve performance excellence.
- To identify the 5 components of a winning team.
- To learn and internalize corporate values.
- To improve team communication effectiveness.
After the purpose and objectives have been established, the appropriate learning tools are selected. These learning tools can be in the form of case studies, movie clips, team discussions, interactive presentations and experiential learning activities. These experiential learning activities are called by different name and terms such as team building games, team building activities, team building exercise, team building initiatives, team management games or simply called team experiential learning games or team experiential learning activities.
The popular team activities in any team building session is treasure hunt, team amazing race, blind man game, obstacles challenge and jungle trekking. These activities are then followed by a reflection and debriefing session. Generally the activities listed above are compartmentalized into two main categories, Indoor team building and outdoor team building.
In a more advanced team building session, the consultant may even design a team simulation activity to measure the teams effectiveness. In such case the teams usually subjected to team performance evaluation or team assessment.
For a more relax and non-structured team building approach, fun team activities such as tele-match is used. The difference between a tele-match and a team building activity is that in team tele-match there are no specific objective directly related to teaming skills and there is no or little reflection and debriefing after such activities. Therefore fun team games and tele-matches are more popular during team outing or team retreats.
